Game Mechanics

Game Mechanics
Index: HUD, Oil & Cooling, Resources, Loot, Combat

Since Feudal Alloy lacks a meaningful tutorial, you may find yourself feeling lost at the start, navigating from basic game mechanics to more complex systems. This page aims to clarify everything you need to understand as you begin the game.

The save in the game doesn't work like in other games, where the entire progress is saved, and if you die or end the game, you lose everything. The save only determines the place where you appear in case of death (i.e., when Attu runs out of oil) or when you end the game. Even if Attu breaks down and returns to the save location or you end the game, he will still have all the items, scrap, and coins he collected up until the last moment.

HUD

One of the most important things in the beginning is to understand what is what on the HUD. In video gaming, the HUD (head-up display) is the method by which information is visually relayed to the player as part of a game's user interface. Let's explain it using the image below.

1. Overheat Meter
If you overheat, you cannot attack or use special move. See the Oil & Cooling section down below.

2. Oil Bar
The amount of oil represents your health. See the Oil & Cooling section down below.

3. Scrap Bar
Pick up scrap to level up your skills. See the Resources section down below.

4. Coins
Number of coins you picked up to buy items, body parts, and weapons from the vendor.

5. - 7. Quick Slots: Bombs, Oil and Cooling
Quick usage and switching for bombs, oil cans and cooling glasses.

Oil & Cooling

The situation on the left illustrates Attu when his oil is low and leaking from his body. The situation on the right depicts Attu when he is overheated, rendering him unable to attack or use any special moves.

Oil as Attu's Life
Oil is what keeps the world of Feudal Alloy moving; the oil bar at the top-left corner of your screen indicates how much oil you have, and when it depletes, Attu is destroyed, and you will have to start from the last save point. Therefore, oil represents your health like you are accustomed to in other games, and there are multiple ways to restore it; the most straightforward is to use oil can items from your quick slot, which is mapped to one button, or a more obscure aspect of how to restore your oil is to use save points, which will restore it fully.

Body parts and weapons have bonuses increasing the oil capacity, meaning Attu can withstand more attacks, but the bulk of the work for your oil tank lies in upgrading your skill tree.

Cooling as Attu's Stamina
Every time you attack, use special move e.g. dash, or are exposed to the external heat, the meter will go up; when it reaches maximum, you cannot attack or use any special move. The main resources to overcome upcoming challenges and help you with heat management is liquid nitrogen, in the form of the cooling glasses item to prevent you from overheating.

Body parts and weapons have two bonuses which will directly upgrade your cooling, the cooling speed and overheat temperature. While cooling speed increases temperature loss and therefore speeds up cooling when Attu is not attacking, the overheating temperature bonus increases the amount of heat Attu's body can withstand before overheating, thus increasing the number of attacks Attu can make before overheating!

Last but not least, the unparalleled help with your body cooling will be upgrading your skill tree and investing skill points into various cooling upgrades, so pick up all the scrap!

Resources

Scrap
Scrap in the game works as experience, so the more scrap you collect, the faster you will gain special upgrades to attack, defense, and other properties. The amount of scrap collected is displayed on the upper scale on the top right next to the gear icon. It can be obtained from the breakable boxes and barrels, but the main source of scrap will be dropped from the enemies you defeat. As you progress further into the world, enemies will drop more and more scrap; the beetle enemy offers the most scrap, for more information about the scrap farming follow to the guides wiki page.

Coins
Collect coins from enemies you defeat or obtain large amounts from light brown chests you discover throughout the world. The only purpose of the coins is to use them at vendor whom you can meet at the three different locations; find the vendor and buy items, body parts, and weapons.

Loot

Equipment Chest Item Chest Coin Chest Scrap Barrel Oil Barrel Cooling Barrel
Scrap Box Large Scrap Box Bombs Box Lootable Bomb Box Lootable Cooling Box Locket

Exploring the areas will yield many rewards, from crucial equipment to survive to a means to progress further. The first thing to mention is that loot, whether it be gear or items, is generally scaled to the area. In areas 1 to 3, you will find loot from the tier one category; in areas 4 to 6, from the tier two category; and in areas 7 to 10, from the tier three category. Above, you can see the various objects you might encounter while traversing the land; be attentive so you don't miss any loot. What you should always be on the lookout for are the chests. There are 3 kinds: in the blue chest you will always find a body part or a weapon; in the dark chest you will find a map, data cartridge, or module; and in the light chest will be coins. In general, with few exceptions, coin chests found in areas 1 to 3 contain 300 coins, while those in areas 4 to 6 contain 500 coins, and chests located in areas 7 to 10 contain 1 000 coins.

Another type of object to focus on is the breakable containers, such as barrels and boxes. Light brown barrels and enclosed boxes without a symbol contain scrap that can be used for upgrading your skill tree. The red barrel with the oil symbol will contain oil cans based on the area, and the blue barrel with the snowflake symbol will contain cooling glasses based on the area. The large box with the bomb symbol can contain each of the four types of bombs, with tiers based on the area. Lootable boxes for bombs and cooling glasses cannot be broken, and you have to interact with them by pressing the up button. The tier of the loot is based on the area as well. The last is a special collectible locket, which is not placed in any chest or box but will always be dangling from the arrow. There is one in each area, so watch out.

Combat

If you are seeking to fulfill Attu's adventure, you will engage in plenty of fighting, as the journey is filled with hordes of enemies. One of the first things to notice is that every contact with the enemy will damage you. At the start of the game, you will only have basic movement, so it will be necessary to jump over enemies and employ a hit-and-run strategy. Fighting multiple enemies at once is never recommended, and if you find yourself surrounded, that is the shortest path to becoming a pile of scrap. Always try to divide and lure the enemy to your advantageous position—positioning it to one side—and if battling more than one enemy is unavoidable, try to bottleneck them so you can hit them all with each hit. Once you unlock more tools via modules, you will be able to fight back more efficiently. Like using the block button, dashing through enemies, double jumping, electromagnetic pulses to stun enemies, and shock waves to damage them from afar.

Once you learn what Attu can do and meet your foes on the battlefield, you will start to recognize the best strategy against each enemy. If you want to learn more about the types of enemies and what to use against them, follow the enemies and bosses wiki pages.

Invincibility
During combat or traversing the area, there are situations where Attu is invincible and cannot be hurt; this is commonly referred to as "invincibility frames" or "iframes." One such situation occurs when Attu takes a hit, and during a small amount of time after the hit, Attu cannot be hurt again. You can increase the invincibility time after a hit with Level 4: Adrenaline defense upgrade on your skill tree. Once you obtain the dash module, you can utilize the iframes to dash through the enemies without getting hurt, which will improve your battle experience immensely. However, there are few exceptions when no iframes will be applied, specifically when you touch the lasers or the spikes.

Parry
In your skill tree you will come across the parry upgrade, which gives you the ability to parry incoming attacks. It is recommended to get it after you have already acquired the block module. You need to press the block button when the attacking animation of the enemy starts, then it will be stunned for you to strike. In case of armored enemies, you will need to dash through them and strike their backs.
